Baytown Apartments for Rent

Just east of Houston, Texas lies the city of Baytown. Originally settled in the early 19th century, this area was once comprised of three separate towns, Goose Creek, Pelly, and East Baytown. At the end of WWII, the three voted to merge and form the city of Baytown. The population of Baytown is estimated at around 70,000. Many of these work at the various oil refineries that have been built in the immediate area.

The average income for men in Baytown is a little over $38k per year, while women average slightly less at $25k. Shopping is available in Baytown at the San Jacinto mall. Large anchor stores like JC Penney, Macy’s, and Marshall’s populate this mall. Only minutes away are attractions like the USS Texas battleship, the San Jacinto monument, and the Houston Raceway Park.

For those looking for a place to live in Baytown, the prices are good. Many apartment communities offer units that start out in the $400 range. A far larger majority of apartments are of the tax credit variety. This means that the person renting the apartment must make less than a specified amount per month or year to qualify to live in these apartments. Some apartment communities offer both types of housing with a set percentage being rented at a low fixed price and the balance being rented out to lower income families at rents based on income.

The major drawback to apartment living in Baytown is the marked absence of many of the newer amenities associated with apartment living in other Houston suburbs. Not a single apartment unit in Baytown has a full sized washer and dryer in the unit. Other amenities are scaled back as well. Most of these communities do not offer a swimming pool or wireless internet access in the common areas the way some of the more upscale apartment communities do.

If one is simply looking for a place to spend time not working or shopping, and is not overly concerned with the presence of all the bells and whistles, Baytown may be the best option as a place to live in the Houston area. Many of the features that renters demand in more upscale apartment communities are not available in the Baytown apartments. Price is the driving force behind the apartment communities in Baytown. Most of the newer apartment communities are tax credit apartments that are only available to those with low incomes. The rest of the available apartments are available at prices considerably lower than those available throughout the bulk of the greater Houston area.

With a growing number of oil refineries in the immediate area and the jobs that go with them, Baytown, Texas is still a growing community in its own right as well as being a suburb of Houston. Shopping and other attractions are available to the residents of Baytown and Baytown apartment rental rates are far lower than in other areas. Just don’t expect to see all the bells and whistles in the apartments you consider renting in the Baytown area.
